JAMES H. BURDEN, M.D.

Dr. James H. Burden was born in Anderson, South Carolina. Following high school, he was awarded an Army ROTC Scholarship and attended Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina where he was the president of the American Medical Student Association. Following graduation in 1991, he completed an Internal Medicine internship at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. He was then assigned to Field Station Sinop in Turkey for one year followed by two years serving in Germany as a Flight Surgeon. Dr. Burden was then assigned to Washington, DC where he completed a three-year residency in Ophthalmology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Following this, he served as Chief of Ophthalmology and Chief of Surgery at Ireland Army Community Hospital, Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was then assigned to Germany where he served as Chief of Ophthalmology Service and Assistant Director of the Warfighter Refractive Laser Center at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Dr. Burden was then selected to join the Ophthalmology residency teaching staff at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas where he completed his service in the US Army in 2005. Dr. Burden and his wife Ilse have two children, Alex and Sarah.
