JAMES DOONER, M.D.

Dr. James Dooner, of Austin Retina Associates, was born in Wisconsin, but spent much of his life in Ireland, including high school and medical school. He graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1991. His university studies were at the University of Rochester where he obtained a bachelors in neuroscience with distinction. He conducted a retina research fellowship at Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins. His ophthalmology residency and retina fellowship were at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He joined Austin retina Associates in 1998 after completing this fellowship.

In addition to his work at Austin Retina Associates, Dr. Dooner has an interest in advancing retinal care in developing countries. He has lectured in China (at the opening of the first retinal institute in Shanghai), and also lectured and performed surgery while in Zimbabwe.

Dr. Dooner is board certified in ophthalmology and is president of the Austin Ophthalmological Society. He is a member of the American Academy of Retina Specialists, Texas Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Texas Medical Association, and American Medical Association.

His clinical and research interests include newer treatments for macular degeneration, retinal detachments, macular holes, treatment of diabetic retinopathy and ocular trauma.
